Sixteen is a word puzzle for a room rather than a person. Sixteen words sit on a shared board and hide four groups of four; you have four lives, and a wrong set of four costs one. When a guess has three of the four right, you are told so — which is the difference between a puzzle and a lottery.
The board is genuinely shared. Anybody can tap a tile and everybody sees it move, because the argument about whether Bridge belongs with the card games or with the London landmarks is the game. Four people privately submitting four sets is four people playing alone in the same room.
The traps are hand-written rather than generated: the words that could sit in two groups are chosen on purpose, and the group names only appear once you have solved them, because they are the payoff and not the clue.
How to play Sixteen
- 1Create a room and share the 6-letter code with a friend or ten.
- 2Sixteen words appear on a board everyone can see and tap.
- 3Pick four you think belong together and submit them — anyone can tap, anyone can submit.
- 4A correct group locks and reveals what connected it. A wrong one costs a life, and three-of-four is flagged as "one away".
- 5Find all four groups before the lives run out.
Sixteen FAQ
How many people can play Sixteen?+
Two to eight. It is one of the few genuinely good two-player games here, and it also works as a whole-table puzzle with everyone shouting at one board.
Can two people tap conflicting tiles?+
Yes, and the fix is to talk to each other. The shared selection is deliberate — a private one would turn a co-operative puzzle into four solo games.
What does "one away" mean?+
Three of the four words you picked belong to the same group. It is the single piece of feedback that makes a wrong guess worth something.
Are there Indian puzzles?+
Yes. The Desi pack is built from Indian food, festivals, railways, films and cricket, and the host can turn it on before the game starts.
Is this the same as Connections?+
It is the same shape of puzzle, rebuilt so a group can play one board together rather than each person doing it alone on their phone.
